Photo of the Week 04/02/12

This past weekend I shot Stephanie and John's wedding at Westbury Manor on Long Island. The ceremony and reception were during the day, which resulted in some nice natural light coming through the windows where the guestbook happened to be situated. I made this image of one of the wedding guests writing a note to the bride and groom using my 85 mm f/1.4 lens at an aperture of f/2.8 and exposure of 1/80th of a second at ISO 800.

I got to meet the fun young lady, seen here playing with her mom's scarf, this past weekend and caught this moment. I love the interaction and expression in this picture. I made this image using my Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 lens at an aperture of f/1.4 and exposure of 1/640th of a second at ISO 800.

Photo of the Week 01/02/12

On New Year's Eve, I photographed the Andrea and Harry's wedding at Danford's Hotel and Marina in Port Jefferson, NY. It could also be said that I went to a really fun party and brought my camera along and it would not be all that inaccurate! For me, this image really captured the festive atmosphere of the wedding. I made this image with my Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 lens at a focal length of 70mm, an aperture of f/2.8, exposure of 1/30th of a second, and ISO 1600. For this shot, I used my SB900 Flash on camera in TTL mode with the diffuser dome and feathered one setting back from straight up. Use of the flash allows me to use such a slow shutter speed and still get a sharp image.

This week's photo of the week comes from the Alison and Joe's wedding which I photographed this past weekend. Alison and Joe are a fun easy going couple which I have had the pleasure of getting to know over the last year. This worked out well as we wanted to take a few formals outside and the 40 degree weather and 40 mph wind did not make it easy. Still there were a few moments such as this one where the weather really didn't seem to matter. More pictures from Alison and Joe's wedding will be coming soon.

I was out in Park Slope, Brooklyn on this past Friday, November 12th and came across this a fire that had started in a supermarket and consumed the two floors of apartments about the store. Thankfully no one at the supermarket or in the apartments above was injured. Here firefighters work to douse the fire several hours after it started. This image was made using my Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 lens at a focal length of 102mm, aperture of f/3.2, exposure of 1/8000th of second, and ISO 100.

In the summer of 2008, I took an amazing trip to the Philippines lasting several weeks. As I was there primarily for a wedding, I spent time in several small towns traveling and staying with the friends and family of the bride and groom. One morning we went into the market in the town of Tigoen and I noticed a woman hunched over a pile of charcoal she was gathering together and apparently selling. Her face and hands were blackened from the charcoal dust and her ragged clothes barely covered her thin frame.

In order to not draw attention to myself, I shot several frames including this one while holding my camera at my side and talking with my friend. I like the authenticity of this image, her resolute expression and posture and apparent indifference to her clothing's lack of coverage, and the way the whites of her eyes stand out against the her charcoal-stained skin. This exposure was made at 1/160th of a second with an aperture of f6.3 and ISO 400 using my Nikon D300 and Nikor 17-55mm f2.8 DX lens at a focal length of 35mm.
